The ePlane Company Opens India’s First eVTOL Facility at IIT Madras

Date:

In a groundbreaking moment for India’s Urban Air Mobility (UAM) ecosystem, The ePlane Company (Ubifly Technologies Pvt. Ltd.) has officially launched its advanced prototyping and testing facility. Located at the IIT Madras Discovery Campus in Thaiyur, this sprawling 60,000-square-foot plant is the country’s first integrated center dedicated entirely to the serial production of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

Inaugurated by Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras and Padma Shri awardee, this facility marks a crucial transition for India’s aviation sector—moving from preliminary designs and subscale models to certification-ready, full-scale flying hardware.

A Comprehensive Aerospace Engineering Hub

Designed to accelerate the journey toward official Type Certification, the new facility centralizes all critical phases of aerospace development under one roof. It will serve as the core engineering center for the company’s cargo, relief, and passenger eVTOL variants.

Key capabilities of the new plant include:

  • Integrated Operations: Housing design, prototyping, sub-system testing, and final integration teams in a single collaborative space.
  • Advanced Manufacturing: Dedicated zones for composite fabrication, electric powertrain assembly, and avionics validation.
  • Ground Test Vehicle (GTV) Facility: A specialized area designed for rigorous subsystem testing and tethered hover flights to ensure absolute safety and performance before airborne trials.

Meet the e200X: Built for the World’s Busiest Cities

Unlike global competitors that require extensive landing infrastructure, The ePlane Company has engineered its flagship aircraft, the e200X, specifically for heavily congested urban environments. Featuring the world’s most compact footprint for its class at just 8 meters by 10 meters, the e200X is uniquely capable of seamless rooftop-to-rooftop operations.

Prof. Satya Chakravarthy, Founder and Technical Lead of The ePlane Company, emphasized the transformative nature of the project:

“This facility is the engine of our commercial future. With the support of IIT Madras, we have built a space where we can fulfill our vision of making flying as common and affordable as taking a taxi. This isn’t just about moving people; it’s about adding another layer of transport to the future of human mobility.”

Strengthening India’s Deep-Tech Ecosystem

This state-of-the-art center is more than just a manufacturing plant; it is a foundational pillar for indigenous deep-tech hardware. By establishing rigorous testing protocols and working closely with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), ePlane is actively helping to draft the regulatory framework for electric aviation in India. It stands as a dedicated space for building zero-emission, energy-efficient transport solutions tailored for dense populations.

The IIT Madras Incubation Advantage

The rapid ascent of The ePlane Company heavily relies on the robust “full-stack” ecosystem provided by the IIT Madras Incubation Cell, which includes:

  • Scalable Infrastructure: Access to the expansive 163-acre Discovery Campus, empowering deep-tech startups to bypass the spatial limits of traditional urban laboratories.
  • Specialized Human Capital: A direct pipeline to world-class engineering talent specializing in composite materials and electric propulsion.
  • Academic Validation: Rigorous, peer-reviewed oversight ensuring that the physics and safety parameters are flawlessly validated long before the aircraft takes flight.
