Teledyne FLIR Introduces Lepton XDS to Revolutionize Compact Thermal Imaging

Date:

Teledyne FLIR OEM, a division of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated, has officially unveiled the Lepton XDS. This innovative, compact camera module combines dual-thermal and visible imaging capabilities, bringing the company’s patented Multi-Spectral Dynamic Imaging (MSX) technology to a fresh category of space- and power-restricted Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) devices.

Designed specifically for swift integration, the Lepton XDS minimizes development risks and significantly reduces the time-to-market for a variety of industrial, mobile, and embedded applications.

Elevating Clarity with MSX Technology and Dual Sensors

The core of the Lepton XDS lies in its powerful dual-sensor architecture. It pairs a 160 × 120 radiometric Lepton 3.5 micro-thermal camera with a high-resolution, five-megapixel (MP) visible sensor. The true differentiator, however, is the integration of FLIR’s proprietary MSX technology.

MSX enhances thermal imagery in real-time by extracting high-contrast details from the visible camera and embossing those edges directly onto the thermal image.

This processing delivers unprecedented context and sharp detail, providing actionable thermal intelligence that is traditionally only available in much larger, cost-prohibitive camera systems. Key application areas poised to benefit from this technology include:

  • Fire detection and prevention systems
  • Electric Vehicle (EV) battery monitoring
  • Robotics and unmanned platform navigation
  • Smart infrastructure and building management
  • Health, safety, and security monitoring

“MSX technology has long been a defining advantage of Teledyne FLIR, and with Lepton XDS, we are making that capability accessible in a compact, OEM-ready module,” stated Mike Walters, Vice President of Product Management at Teledyne FLIR OEM. By delivering clearer imagery directly through onboard processing, OEMs can empower end-users with faster, more accurate data interpretation.

Notable features of the Prism ISP include:

  • Industry-first radiometric JPEG (RJPEG) output.
  • Thermal-visible image fusion and advanced processing algorithms.
  • Built-in measurement tools such as Regions of Interest (ROI), spot temperature meters, and isotherms.
  • Customizable color palettes for specific environmental needs.

Furthermore, the module is seamlessly compatible with the broader Teledyne FLIR OEM software ecosystem, streamlining post-processing, analysis, and reporting tasks.

Built for Global, Scalable OEM Deployment

Understanding the demands of modern manufacturing, Teledyne FLIR engineered the Lepton XDS to be highly optimized for Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP). Featuring an industry-standard USB output, it is an ideal solution for battery-powered, always-on systems.

Crucially for international manufacturers, the Lepton XDS is completely ITAR-free (classified under 6a993.b.4.b). This classification ensures the module is broadly available for commercial deployment across the globe without stringent export restrictions. Backed by Teledyne FLIR’s proven high-volume manufacturing capabilities—having already delivered over six million Lepton units worldwide—OEMs can scale production confidently with minimized supply-chain risk.
