DNP Invests in Rapidus to Accelerate 2nm Semiconductor Production

In a decisive move to reclaim Japan’s leadership in the global semiconductor landscape, Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd. (DNP) has officially announced its participation in the latest funding round for Rapidus Corporation. This strategic investment is designed to transition Rapidus from its current research and development phase into a powerhouse for the mass production of 2nm (2-nanometer) logic semiconductors by 2027.

The partnership represents more than just a financial injection; it is a technical synergy aimed at solving one of the most complex hurdles in modern chipmaking: the perfection of EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) lithography photomasks.

Bridging the Gap to 2nm Technology

As global data generation skyrockets, so does the energy consumption of the hardware processing it. The industry is facing an urgent demand for next-generation semiconductors that offer higher performance with significantly lower power draws.

Next-generation 2nm chips, manufactured using advanced EUV lithography, allow for much finer circuit patterns to be etched onto silicon wafers. DNP’s role is critical here; they are tasked with the development and mass production of the photomasks—essentially the “blueprints”—required to project these microscopic patterns.

From NEDO Subcontractor to Strategic Investor

The relationship between DNP and Rapidus is already rooted in a strong technical foundation. In 2024, DNP was selected as a subcontractor for Rapidus under the Post-5G Information and Communications System Infrastructure Enhancement R&D Project, an initiative led by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).

Under this project, DNP has been refining manufacturing processes for 2nm generation EUV photomasks. This new investment deepens that bond, ensuring that DNP can achieve:

  • High-yield production: Reducing waste and increasing the number of viable masks.
  • Short lead times: Accelerating the journey from design to the factory floor.
  • Scalability: Establishing a robust mass-production system in sync with Rapidus’ 2027 goal.

Looking Beyond 2nm: The 1.4nm Horizon

DNP is not just looking at the immediate 2027 deadline. The company has positioned EUV lithography photomasks as its primary growth driver for its semiconductor division. Looking ahead, DNP is already eyeing the 1.4nm generation and beyond, ensuring that Japan remains at the cutting edge of the “finer is better” race in semiconductor physics.

“Our investment will further strengthen the partnership between our two companies,” DNP stated, emphasizing their commitment to the growth of Japan’s domestic semiconductor ecosystem. By securing the supply chain for these critical components, DNP and Rapidus are positioning themselves to be indispensable players in the age of AI and high-performance computing.
